FICAM (Central housing insurance file)

Français : FICAM (Fichier central des assurances de maisons)

Database shared among Canadian P&C insurers, used to verify a borrower's claims history during mortgage underwriting.

Definition

FICAM (in English: Central Insurance Claims File) is a database shared among Canadian P&C insurers (fire, accidents, and miscellaneous risks), administered by CGI Group. It compiles claims history on a property or by a policyholder.

In the mortgage context, the lender systematically requires home insurance before funding. The insurer then queries FICAM to assess risk — a heavy history can lead to a premium hike or refusal, which can jeopardize the mortgage transaction.

FICAM is not managed by the AMF but is framed by Law 25 and federal PIPEDA. You have the right, at any time, to request access to your FICAM file via CGI Insurance Services. Many mortgage brokers recommend checking your file 30-60 days before purchase to anticipate surprises.
